Virtual communication isn’t as personal as live meetings and events. This makes it more challenging to engage an audience and keep them engaged. By default, attention spans are shorter and it’s easier to tune out without being noticed. Also, visual/nonverbal cues are harder to pick up on, which makes it harder to build trust.
Look in the camera instead of the screen. Find ways of reminding yourself to do this, either with a post it note or by dragging the faces on your screen towards your camera. Employ storytelling or a narrative form of sharing information when you can. Don’t neglect facial expressions and gestures—on camera you have to give 10x more energy so that it comes through on the screen. You can also read our blog on 8 tips for presenting virtually.
No. Businesses and organizations are saving too much time, money, and resources through virtual communication. At this rate, the world will give up social media all at once before it gives up virtual communication in business.
Lack of Clarity: Half-baked or vague communication is bad enough in-person. It’s even worse in the virtual space since there’s minimal nonverbal cues. Be clear and concrete when communicating.
Multitasking: It’s tempting to check that email or reply to that message since you’re already at your PC. But how easy it is to get carried away and lose track of the discussion. Give the call or meeting your complete attention.
Having No Structure: A meeting without structure can easily get derailed. A virtual meeting without structure is pure chaos—especially when bad audio and internet lag is involved. Always make sure everyone is on mute apart from the main speaker and only unmute when it makes sense to do so. Which also has the added benefit of minimizing the chance screaming kids, barking dogs, and sirens take over the audio.

Encourage Participation: Encourage participation and engagement from your audience. Ask questions and solicit feedback to keep the conversation going.
Use Visual Aids: Use images, videos, and other visual aids to supplement your message and make it more engaging.
Clearly articulate your message: Make sure that your message is clear and easy to understand. Avoid using jargon or complex language.
